These visible signs may be hiding liver disease

1. Fatigue and appetite loss

Persistent fatigue and a noticeable loss of appetite are often early, though nonspecific, signs of liver disease such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The liver’s role in metabolizing nutrients and producing energy means that when it is inflamed or damaged, these processes become less efficient, leading to systemic tiredness.

Fatigue related to liver dysfunction tends to be more profound than typical tiredness and may not improve with rest. Appetite loss can contribute to unintended weight loss, further weakening the body and impairing recovery.

Anyone experiencing unexplained prolonged fatigue combined with reduced appetite, especially if risk factors like obesity or diabetes are present, should seek medical evaluation. Early detection can lead to interventions that slow disease progression.

2. Abdominal discomfort or enlargement

Liver inflammation and fat accumulation can cause the liver to enlarge, which may be felt as fullness or discomfort in the upper right abdomen. This abdominal enlargement can sometimes be visible or palpable during a physical exam.

Discomfort may range from a vague feeling of heaviness to more distinct pain, often exacerbated by pressure or movement. In advanced liver disease, the abdomen may become distended due to fluid buildup, known as ascites, which requires timely medical management.

Because abdominal discomfort is common and can result from many causes, it is important to correlate this symptom with other signs of liver dysfunction and risk factors to guide appropriate testing.
