These visible signs may be hiding liver disease

3. Skin changes

Several skin manifestations can signal underlying liver disease. These include spider angiomas—small, spider-like blood vessels visible on the skin—palmar erythema, which is redness of the palms, and easy bruising. These occur because liver impairment affects hormone metabolism and blood clotting factors.

Another common skin change is pruritus, or itching, which arises from bile salt accumulation in the body. Persistent itching that lacks a clear dermatological cause should prompt investigation for liver disorders.

Recognizing these skin signs early can help prompt timely liver function testing and specialist referral before severe complications develop.

4. Jaundice

Jaundice, characterized by yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes, results from the accumulation of bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cell breakdown that the liver normally processes and excretes.

This is a hallmark sign of significant liver dysfunction or bile duct obstruction and should never be ignored. Jaundice often indicates that liver disease has advanced to a stage requiring urgent evaluation and management.

5. Bruising and bleeding

The liver produces many proteins essential for blood clotting. When liver function declines, the synthesis of these clotting factors diminishes, leading to an increased tendency to bruise easily and bleed.

Patients may notice frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or prolonged bleeding from minor cuts. Such symptoms warrant prompt blood tests evaluating clotting times and liver enzyme levels to assess liver health.
